Years ago, while doing research for a college paper focused on the relationship between body image, self-esteem and fashion and how the three are intertwined I stumbled across a course of actions which allow a person to "put on," so to speak,  to create and perfect identities that help make their lives work more effectively.  It's called the selfing process or the communication of the self. This process includes five layers of getting ready that work harmoniously together. However, the necessary prerequisites are respecting yourself and of course, liking yourself.

The five layers of the selfing process include:

• Verbal communication
• Poise, posture and movement
• Manners and etiquette
• Grooming and cosmetics
• Clothing and fashion

In understanding how this process works know that it is mostly visual. It also helps to recognize that bodily behavior and clothing are significant aspects of non-verbal communication, which allows you to create an external identity to present to others.

When you combine the interaction of body image, self-awareness, fashion and communication you can create a mixture of multi-messages

These messages can easily contradict each other and create confusion for you and for other people watching you. On the other hand, if used properly, the selfing process can help you to convey messages that are clear and accurate, communication that reflects who you are and what you would like others to perceive about you. You are in control.  When creating your external identities it is important to recognize that we are all social persons. No matter how extroverted or introverted we might be, we need to identify ourselves within a group. We all want to belong to a certain degree. That's why there are social clubs, organizations, sororities and other groups of interest to

individuals. But, in order to belong and be of value, we need to appreciate who we are so that we can share and connect with others. We are also psychological individuals who can be as private and as disconnected as hibernating bears. We are each definitely seeking to establish our individuality as well.

Think of a time when you allowed yourself to put on, when you practiced the selfing process, a time when you purposely set out to dress and behave in a certain way to accomplish a certain goal. Go on, reflect and write it down.
